Signs of Depression - Are You Suffering From Anyone of Them?

There are all times when we have our ups and downs in life and feel irritable. This is a normal part of one's life. However, when a person faces prolonged and consistent periods of sadness it is known as depression. It refers to a state of low mood as well as aversion which in turn can affect a person's behavior, thought processes, sense of well-being as well as feelings. In turn, these people may often feel hopeless, anxious, worried, sad, hurt, guilty, worthless, restless and empty.

This type of sadness is extremely different from the occasional sadness that one may feel. It is often a result of inability to cope with stressful and/or overwhelming situations, loss of loved ones, conflicts as well as a variety of other factors.

Some of the different causes of depression may be due to biological, psychological, environmental or even social factors. Distress is known to not only interfere in one's daily activities, but many people are known to report having difficulties while sleeping, working, concentrating on tasks and/or eating.

Some of the common symptoms of depression include feelings of despair, extreme and prolonged periods of sadness, (for over two weeks and more), chronic pain, stomach aches, headaches, physical pain, feelings of restlessness, feelings of anger and withdrawal symptoms. Severe cases of distress may lead people to have suicidal thoughts and feelings of helplessness.

Various medical conditions as well as diseases are known to be accompanied with distress such as heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, etc. People suffering from this condition are unable to seek solutions to the various obstacles or problems that occur in their lives where they have choices as well as the power to change things in their life. Each type differs according to the severity of the symptoms as well as any additional symptom such as hallucinations, psychosis, mania, etc.

Some of the different types of depression include:

Major depression: Also known as clinical distress, unipolar distress/disorder or recurrent depressive disorder this type of metal disorder is one which is associated with a prolonged, all-encompassing low mood state that is characteristic of low self-esteem and loss of any form of happiness in everyday activities.Chronic depression: This type of depression, also known as dysthymia is characteristic of a depressed state of mind for over 2 years. While there may certain occasions when a person feels alright these moods often do not last for over a week. Some of the common symptoms include low self-esteem, poor concentration, insomnia, irritability and low energy levels.Atypical depression: A sub-type of dysthymia and major depression, atypical depression (a.k.a. depression with atypical features) has many symptoms which are similar to psychiatric syndromes, dysthymia and major depression.Postpartum depression: This type affects women post childbirth and results in a number of hormonal changes, fatigue as well as psychological adjustment to motherhood.Bipolar depression: Also known as manic-depressive disorder, this condition is also known as bipolar effective disorder or manic distress. People suffer from episodes of depression as well as episodes of a very high mood known as mania.Seasonal depression: Also known as seasonal effective disorder (SAD) and winter depression/blues people suffering from this condition experience severe depressive states only in the winter and/or less frequently during summer.Psychotic depression: An extreme case of distress; people suffering from this type lose complete touch with reality and suffer a number of functional impairments.

While there are many different types of depression, each type needs to be treated using a different approach. Depression treatment involves not only the application of psychotherapy, but also the various medications such as anti-depressants. However, they are known to have their own side-effects so it is extremely important to consult a doctor routinely during the treatment.

Depression treatment differs according to the individual as well as the symptoms that are displayed by him/her. While many people rely on various prescribed medications for treatment, psychotherapy as well behavioural therapy is known to play a significant role in treatment of depression. Rate this Article

Seniors and Elderly Suffering Holiday Depression

As Christmas approaches, most of us begin to feel the delight and anticipation the holiday festivities bring. We marvel at the houses bedecked with brilliant multi-colored lights and are uplifted by the sense of family. It's easy to get caught up in the planning and excitement of presents, parties and celebrations.

But not everyone rejoices at the holiday cheer. In fact this is a time of year when many seniors, elderly and disabled individuals succumb to depression. It's difficult to go on celebrating year after year when you've lost people you've known for years to illness and old age. Also, having fewer relatives and friends in your life means you can feel forgotten or believe you're a burden to those who know you. Many seniors and elderly people withdraw gradually and their families and loved ones may not even realize they are depressed.

Depression is easy to overlook because we've all felt down, sad or frustrated at one time or another and the clinical symptoms cover so many other illnesses. Someone suffering from depression may not even realize it, they may just think they're tired or burned out. Depression is an insidious illness that is hard to recognize and fight, especially alone.

The most common symptoms of depression are fatigue and lack of energy or enthusiasm, feelings of being worthless or hopeless, irritability or anxiety. People suffering with depression lose interest in hobbies and activities they usually enjoy, have trouble making decisions and concentrating or remembering details. Loss of appetite or overeating is also an indicator that something serious is wrong. Another possible sign of depression is insomnia, the inability to sleep adds to the person's failure to concentrate or think straight. Lack of sleep can also cause hallucinations and increase feelings of hopelessness. And of course, having thoughts of suicide or making suicidal attempts.

The thought of being alone during the holidays can be overwhelmingly painful and unbearable even without clinical depression. Fortunately, there is a solution. If you know someone suffering from depression or who needs in home care services, homecare agencies can arrange a Senior Companion or Caregiver to provide company and assistance. Services are either hourly or 24 hour live in care and can include companionship, personal hygiene, housecleaning, laundry, errands, cooking and transportation to doctor's and social appointments.

Jackie Brown is a Case Manager at A-1 Home Care Agency and is the author of several newsletters and articles on their website and blogs. She has written about Depression and other senior ailments including Alzheimer's, Dementia and Caregiver Services.
